It has always been shocking to me as a licensed practicing esthetician how many people suffer from acne. Acne is one of the most common skin disorders. According to studies, it affects 85% of people at some point in their lives usually between the ages of 12-24.
Recently, I heard that I have been referred to as the “Acne Whisperer.” This pleases me because I have spent much of my career fighting the good fight against acne misinformation and products that claim to be anti-acne, but are not. I love helping people beat acne and find truly healthy, vibrant skin!
First Step: Eliminate Comedogenic Products
I see so many people who have suffered with acne for years. They typically tell me that they have tried everything. But, when I analyze the products they are using twice a day in their skincare ritual, I find that every single product is comedogenic (produces or aggravates acne), inflammatory, and barrier disrupting.
Many of these products have been recommended by other estheticians and dermatologists. Sometimes the products were recommended by an influencer that told their followers that the product would give them fabulous skin.
So, the first step in any acne treatment is to get rid of any products that are pore clogging!
Find out if Your Products are Comedogenic!
It is important to note that, just because a product has a marketing claim that it is acne safe or non-comedogenic, it doesn’t necessarily meant that it is true. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen a product labeled acne safe or non-comedogenic only to look at the ingredient deck to see it’s actually an acne nightmare!
Want to know if the products you use have comedogenic ingredients?
Below you will find a search tool filled with a list of the most common comedogenic ingredients. Enter the ingredients listed on your product to find out if they are pore clogging. If you suffer from acne and any of these ingredients are in the products you use, throw them out!
Next Step: Find Products that Support Your Skin
Once you have gotten rid of the products that aggravate your skin, you need to replace them with non-comedogenic products that repair and support your skin.
I have curated a list of acne-safe products, from skincare to shampoo and sunscreen, which pass my rigorous requirements. All of these products have skin supporting properties and won’t clog your pores.
